Worn Australian switchboard with ceramic fuses and no safety switches
Common signs

If these sound familiar, it’s worth asking.

✓
Ceramic fuses
Older boards often need modern protection and a cleaner layout.
✓
Repeated tripping
Especially when appliances, EV charging or cooling are added.
✓
No visible spare ways
The board may be full before the next project even starts.
Worth knowing

What "no" actually looks like

Not every board needs replacing. A newer board with safety switches on every circuit, visible spare ways and no history of nuisance tripping is usually fine as-is, even if it's a decade or two old.

What tips the answer to "yes" is usually a combination: ceramic fuses plus a new EV or induction load, or a full board with no room for the renovation you're planning. A photo of the open board is normally enough for a first opinion — you don't need to guess.

FAQs

Switchboard upgrade questions

?
Is this only for old houses?
No. Even newer homes can need an upgrade after load changes or builder-grade installs.
?
Can I add EV later without an upgrade?
Sometimes, but a photo-based assessment is the safest way to know.
?
Should I upload photos?
Yes. The switchboard and meter location are the best two pictures to start with.

Ask before the next appliance forces the issue.
