Installing a split system in Adelaide: who does the electrical work?

Spring is a practical time to plan cooling before Adelaide's hottest weeks. A good split-system quote should tell you more than the unit model and a single installed price. It should make the trade responsibilities and any electrical upgrades clear before work starts.
Which trades are involved?
Air-conditioning installation can include mounting the indoor and outdoor units, refrigerant pipework, drainage, electrical supply and final commissioning. South Australian licensing conditions for air-conditioning installation explicitly exclude physical electrical work unless the installer is also registered for it. The Australian Refrigeration Council describes the refrigerant handling licence types for split systems.
One business may coordinate qualified people for the whole job. Another quote may cover only part of it. Ask for the name of the business responsible for each part and whether the written price includes the electrician, refrigeration work and any required trade-specific paperwork.
What electrical work should the quote spell out?
- Whether a new circuit, switchboard change or other supply work is needed for the proposed unit.
- The route and finish for wiring, the location of required isolation, and any wall or ceiling access.
- Testing and the electrical eCoC for work that requires one.
- Who makes good any penetrations or surfaces and who removes the old unit, if relevant.
- Any exclusions or extra charges if the existing wiring or board is unsuitable.
For an older Norwood or Prospect house, ask about the existing board and cable path. For an Adelaide CBD unit, check building access, strata or owner approvals and outdoor-unit location before accepting the quote. For a Glenelg property, ask how the proposed outdoor position and exposure affect the installation plan. These are scoping prompts, not assumptions about every property in those suburbs.
What about South Australia's 2026 heating and cooling offers?
South Australia's Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS) has a heating and cooling activity that can include efficient reverse-cycle systems. It is not a cash rebate paid by the state to every buyer. ESCOSA explains that offers depend on the provider, product, property and eligibility; a discount or reduced price is usually applied through an approved activity provider. Ask the provider to show the eligible product, total installed cost, any co-payment and what is included before you compare it with an independent quote.
What should you send for an accurate quote?
Provide the room dimensions, ceiling height, insulation and window details, photos of the proposed indoor and outdoor positions, a switchboard photo with its cover in place, and any access constraints. If you have not chosen a unit, see our Adelaide split-system sizing guide. For the installation scope, start at air-conditioning electrical services in Adelaide.
Common questions
Can an air-conditioning installer do the electrical wiring?
Only if the person doing the fixed electrical work holds the appropriate South Australian electrical registration for that work. Air-conditioning installation credentials alone do not authorise electrical wiring.
Is every Adelaide household eligible for a REPS air-conditioner discount?
No. Activity availability and eligibility vary by provider, property, product and scheme requirements. Check directly with an approved activity provider, and compare the total installed scope and cost.
