Why does my safety switch keep tripping?

First: keep it safe
If you smell burning, see smoke, hear arcing, receive a shock or find water near electrical equipment, keep clear and seek urgent help. Never tape a switch on, bypass protection or open the switchboard.
Could an appliance be responsible?
If conditions are safe and you know which appliances lost power, switching off and unplugging portable appliances may help identify whether one item is associated with the trip. Do not handle wet, damaged or unusually hot appliances.
Why it may trip only sometimes
Some faults appear with rain, heat, vibration or a particular appliance cycle. Several devices can also contribute small leakage currents that add up. Note the time, weather and equipment operating when the trip occurs.
What an electrician tests
A licensed electrician can isolate circuits, inspect equipment and perform electrical tests to locate leakage or insulation problems. That is more reliable than repeatedly resetting and waiting for the next failure.
What should you do next?
For a site-specific answer, describe the property, symptoms and timing. A licensed professional can then confirm what testing or inspection is required before quoting.
