Power point installation cost in Adelaide: what affects the quote?

New Australian USB power point installed in an Adelaide home
Quick answerPower point installation cost in Adelaide depends less on the faceplate and more on whether compliant wiring already exists at that position. Replacing a damaged outlet like for like is usually the simplest scope. Adding a new indoor, outdoor, USB or dedicated appliance outlet requires assessment of access, cable route, circuit capacity and protection.

Four jobs people call “install a power point”

  1. Like-for-like replacement: test the circuit and replace an existing fitting where the cable and location remain suitable.
  2. New point on an existing circuit: extend cable and confirm the circuit can support the addition.
  3. New dedicated circuit: significant or specialised loads may need their own cable and protective device.
  4. Outdoor or exposed point: weather protection, mounting and cable routing must suit the location.

What changes the Adelaide quote?

  • brick, double brick, plasterboard or tiled walls;
  • roof, underfloor and wall-cavity access;
  • distance and obstacles between outlet and switchboard;
  • existing circuit load and safety-switch protection;
  • single, double, USB, weatherproof or higher-current outlet;
  • patching, chasing, painting or cabinetry;
  • number of points completed in one visit;
  • parking, access and after-hours timing.

Why a photo is not enough for a fixed price

A photo shows the wall but not the cable route, circuit condition or concealed obstacles. Send a wide room photo, desired position, nearest existing outlet and the closed switchboard. State the wall type and what will be plugged in.

What should be included?

A clear quote identifies the outlet model and quantity, cable and circuit work, testing, access assumptions, exclusions, GST and compliance documentation. South Australia's regulator says electrical work must be certified through an electronic Certificate of Compliance.

Can you add a point for an oven, EV or air conditioner?

Do not assume a general outlet is suitable. Ovens, cooktops, EV equipment and air conditioners may need dedicated circuits or isolation. Describe the appliance with a photo of its rating label. For vehicles, use an electrician familiar with home EV charger installation.

Is doing several at once cheaper?

It can be. One attendance and an efficient cable route may reduce the average cost per point. Ask for an itemised base scope and optional extra points.

When not to wait for a normal quote

Stop using an outlet that is hot, scorched, cracked, sparking, buzzing or loose. If there is smoke, fire or immediate danger, call 000. Do not remove the faceplate or attempt a DIY replacement.
